Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Manager – Kalumbila, Zambia Barrick Lumwana Mining Corporation is seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional for one of the premier tsf manager jobs in Kalumbila. This full-time position offers the opportunity to lead the safe and efficient management of tailings storage facility operations at the Lumwana Copper Mine, located in Kalumbila, North West Province, Zambia.
About the Role Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the TSF Manager will serve as the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE), accountable for the entire lifecycle of the tailings storage facility. This critical leadership role involves overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards, and managing the interface between operations and the ongoing TSF expansion design and construction programs.
Key Responsibilities for TSF Manager Jobs in Kalumbila Act as the accountable RTFE for all operational and closure phases of the Lumwana TSF. Maintain a productive working relationship with the Engineer of Record (EoR), providing functional direction while respecting their independent professional responsibilities.
Ensure TSF construction, operation, and monitoring comply with approved designs, Zambian regulations, the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM 2020), and Barrick’s Tailings Management Standard. Oversee and approve the Operation, Maintenance, and Surveillance (OMS) Manual, and ensure all staff are trained accordingly.
Schedule and participate in routine inspections, dam safety reviews, and third-party audits, implementing recommendations promptly. Manage the Corrective Action Plan (CAP) registry, ensuring timely resolution of priority issues and communication with the Accountable Executive.
Lead the Potential Failure Mode Analysis (PFMA) and Critical Controls Management Plan (CCMP), ensuring annual updates. Monitor and report Quantitative Performance Objectives (QPOs) such as freeboard, beach width, pond volume, embankment rise rates, and piezometric levels.
Maintain and calibrate the site-specific water balance and tailings deposition models. Ensure the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (EPRP) is current, tested, and effectively communicated.
Manage the Management of Change (MoC) process for all significant deviations from design intent. Maintain the Working Closure Plan and ensure operations align with closure objectives.
Oversee the annual Life of Mine (LOM) tailings capacity review and communicate findings to senior management and the EoR. Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline; postgraduate qualifications in geotechnical or tailings engineering are advantageous.
At least 15 years of experience in geotechnical or tailings engineering, including a minimum of 5 years in an operational RTFE or equivalent role managing high- or very-high-consequence TSFs. Proven experience managing TSF raise campaigns, consultant relationships, and construction quality assurance programs.
Strong knowledge of the GISTM (2020), ICMM Tailings Governance Framework; familiarity with ANCOLD, CDA, or ICOLD guidelines is an asset. Registered Professional Engineer (or equivalent) status in a recognized jurisdiction is preferred.
Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa or similar remote/developing environments is highly desirable. Demonstrated senior leadership skills and ability to develop multicultural teams in operational mining settings.
